Microsoft to release Virtual Server 2005 R2 for free

Several reliable sources reported me Microsoft is expected to released Virtual Server 2005 R2 Enterprise Edition for free during next week, possibly on Monday. If true with this move Microsoft will try to embank actual VMware strategy, based on VMware Player, upcoming Server and virtual appliances. Just yesterday I wrote how Microsoft is actually the big absentee of virtualization market. I doubt this move will help much. Note: this information didn't come from any Microsoft channel and although I'm a Most Valuable Professional (MVP) I was completely ignoring the move.

This may represent a big step for Microsoft on the virtualization arena.
If I'm not wrong, the license for Enterprise Edition includes 4 free of charge running instances of Windows Server if you're running MS-Virtual Server.

I think you're thinking of Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition:

"...under a single license on a server, you may run up to four instances of the server software in virtual operating system environments on that server (only one instance per virtual operating system environment)."
(from: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensingr2/overview.mspx)

This would be independent of the virtualization software used, it appears.

That makes a lot of sense. Microsoft has to do something to keep its product out there in the hands of users. With VMware giving away Server, and with Xen looming in the weeds, Virtual Server has to do something. And since there doesn't appear to be a whole lot of new features announced, and since Vista/Longhorn are being pushed out, this is the best thing they CAN do right now.

Let's hope its true! Would be great for the consumers.

MS would have to pay to get users attracted to Virtual Server now that VMware will release VMware Server for free.
Virtual server is soooo obsolete feature wise...

This article should be titled "Microsoft to relase Virtual Server 2005 R2 for the price that it is worth"

Come on people.

I think Virtual Server 2005 R2 is worth the current price for a company. If it is going to be free, great!

We use Virtual Server and even though VMWare might be better Virtual Server is good enough for us and works just fine with the Windowsenviroment we have. Other platforms are currently not of any interest for us.

VS is great! We use it as well and haven't had trouble with it. We don't have any thing other than windows running either. Besides for a mom and pop shop, you can't beat the price.

Can't beat the price of MS Virtual Server? VM Ware is free already, at this point it's only a rumor that MS VS will be so yes you can beat the price.

It may just be a coincidence, but in the last hour or two this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=dcb5f930-78f2-4383-9856-e7c781c21a9e&displaylang=en

has appeared, "Virtual Server 2005 R2 - Getting Started Guide".

Of course it is only documentation, not the installer, so far
