Xen to be integrated in Solaris 10 next year

On a CNet article about new effort of Sun to support PostgreSQL in the near future, Martin LaMonica writes about Sun plans to integrate Xen in Solaris 10 (and obviously OpenSolaris) for September of next year. If so Solaris 10 is going to become a very powerful platform for virtualization counting at the same time on Sun partition technology, Solaris Zones, and XenSource paravirtualization. I also need to underline that Solaris 10 is supported on every x86 CPU and will surely support AMD and Intel virtualization extensions, eventually permitting to run Windows virtual machines inside Xen. At no cost even for commercial use, and with this bright future, Solaris 10 could become the MUST platform for virtualization in the enterprise.

I think you will find that this is the addition of the paravirtualisation fatures (i.e. abstracted chip type with hypercall support, not the ability of Solaris 10 to be the Xen hypervisor/VMM/Zone 0 host that cnarun other VMs. So it might make a good guest O/S if you have proted your app to Solaris but I do not really see it as the killer virtulisation app - I think the Xen hypervisor may prove to be this. It will however iondirectly allow Solaris to take advantage of the Linux driver set as they can be run under IO spaces and you run Solaris X86 as a non-returning/single zone. This approach is likely to become more with the advent of various baremetal plays, predicated on Xen and IO spaces.

I just meant that Solaris 10 is going to be the only OS able to host you two different virtualization technologies at no cost (even the OS itself).
