For anyone experiencing hard-locks running Virtual PC 2004 on an AMD system, a Hotfix has just been given to Microsoft Product Support for this problem. If you contact support they should be able to give you this fix free of charge. At this time the Knowledge Base article (Q833506) is still in development. I'll publish it here as available.
